I’ve got an old dog that’s started drinking a lot more water in the last few weeks, and also going to the bathroom in the house. At first we thought it was separation anxiety, but today we notices that urine is leaking out of her when she is laying down. Any suggestions?
It could be a UTI, but spay incontinence is not uncommon in older dogs – I had an old dog who was incontinent for the last two years of her life. She spend most of her time outside, so I just kept her off the carpet and cleaned up after her when she was inside.
Sometimes the vet can give the dog hormones which will help, and they do make "panties" for dogs that can be used for incontinence.
I would take her to the vet and have her checked in case it is an infection or diabetes (drinking a lot can be a symptom) and see what he says.

Fist of all a vet check up, as it could be several things.
It could first of all be a simple UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) bit like we get. Simple anti-biotics would clear this.
It could be the drinking is just because it is hot, and the leaking is due to weak muscles which spayed b*tches often get when they are older. There is a liquid called propalyn syrup that works wonders for that.
But……….. it could be something more serious and you will probably need some bloods done to find out.

Take her to the vets. Could be any number of things. One thing that comes to my mind is spay incontinence. Your vet can give you meds to rid your dog of that problem.

It’s common for older dogs’ sphincter muscles to weaken, just like their other muscles will lose tone. Your vet can prescribe Proin, which will likely completely resolve the issue quite inexpensively.

There is medication for incontinency called Propalin, ask your vet about it. I think it tightens the bladder walls in older dogs and worked wonders for my dog who was very incontinent.

You can take her to the vet and have her tested for a UTI and Diabetes, and if it is diagnosed as incontinence you can get a prescription for Phenylpropanolamine to control the leaking.
